Wry Baby’s Wheel of Responsibility (Wry Baby’s popular baby shower gift) got a little love from the April 15 issue of Time Out New York Kids. The article is called SEPARATE BUT EQUAL; How to Find Parity on the Parenting Front (by Patty Onderko). Here’s what Patty had to say:

Have you ever seen that gag gift for new parents called the Wheel of Responsibility? Whenever you’re faced with an unpleasant parenting task—cleaning poop off crib railings, say, or playing peekaboo for the 753rd time—you just spin the arrow on the wheel and it lands on either Mom or Dad, instantly solving your “You’re not doing enough!” squabbles. Maybe we should take this novelty item more seriously, because real life is not so simple—or so fair. More often than not, the arrow ends up on Mom. And for women who grew up swearing they’d be the anti–June Cleaver, that’s a bitter pill to swallow.

Patty goes on to give some great pointers on how to get the baby duty divided equally without turning it into an all-out battle. When Kelly and I (Wry Baby Founders) are asked what we do for a living, somehow saying, “We make funny baby clothes.“, doesn’t quite say enough. Because what are funny baby clothes, anyway? Little clown suits? While that’s not really a bad idea, that’s not what we mean by funny baby clothing.

Some Wry Baby styles are pretty chuckle-worthy (see, I Might Barf. A classic Wry Baby sanpsuit), but what we try to do is come up with a funny baby tee that’s not just a funny baby tee. Something that has a little extra bit of cleverness that makes it special. And it’s hard, believe me. You can make funny baby clothes about dirty diapers 24/7, but what we set out to do is tweak every baby shower gift, or new mom or new dad present, to make it something different than what you’re seeing everywhere else. A truly unique baby gift.
