Wry Baby is based in Mooresville, NC. Basically it’s a LOT of farmland, a quaint downtown and encroaching suburban sprawl. Tract housing is booming here and it’s ugly, cheap and plentiful. And then there’s Antiquity.

Nestled behind Cornelius, NC, there’s a new development that’s trying to recreate the old neighborhoods that sprang up along the railroad tracks back when these towns were founded. And for the most part, they’re succeeding. An newly built, enormous covered bridge is your gateway to Antiquity, NC and suddenly you’re transported to the early 1900’s.

The houses are extremely imaginative and fairly accurate in depicting the styles they’re recreating with modern materials such as Hardie Plank siding, EnergyStar windows and tile porches. It was too soon to tour through, but we got a glimpse inside through a window and saw they were as detailed in as they were out (wainscoting on the grand stairs leading up from the front door).

The only drag is that it IS a modern development which means that the homes are built right on top of each other. Imagine sitting in the screened porch above, for example. Made us think for a quick San Francisco minute that with homes smooshed this close together, maybe they might have been better off choosing another city to model their project on.

I couldn’t help but compare to another of my favorite Main Street imitations (Disneyland, of course) and it’s a wonder that the folks building Antiquity (the Cunnane Group) could get it all so right and not be affiliated with Disney. These stately recreations are sized from 2400 – 3300 sq ft. and are priced from $339,000. And take it from a guy restoring a 1906 Folk Victorian nearby, that’s a bargain!
