Well, he hasn’t YET. But he will tomorrow. The smallest of the Wry Baby team is having his big birthday party tomorrow and the main event is this “piñata” Kelly and I put together. Atticus asked us for a piñata that wouldn’t break right away so we happily and overindulgently obliged. Actually, I don’t think this sucker’s ever going to break. I don’t even think I can break it.

Like our funny baby clothes and unique shower gifts, the best parts are in the details. Not only is this robot huge and fierce, but the goody bags are in the form of paper maché “bombs” full of candy and treats. These weapons of mass tooth destruction will only be available to the children once the robot menace is vanquished and summarily disemboweled. Fun!

When we had our little guy, the delivery was all over the map. From dramatic to scary to hard to easy to downright dull (gotta love the epidural). I’m dying to see what this puppy does. I hope it shoots frosty cocktails. Or maybe it just sparks and plays Martin Denny music. Either way, what bliss. I’ll probably end up saving it and keeping it at the office ’cause it’s so purty. That’s just what you want. Mystery explosives on your desk at face level. Have a safe Fourth, everyone! Way before our son was born, my folks thought that a dollhouse kit would be an excellent Christmas gift for me. It was called The Beacon Hill and it was a 300 lbs. box of raw, flat wood. See, you punch out the pieces, sand them, stain or paint them then glue them together to make an elaborate victorian dollhouse.

Easy, right? Well after 3 months of basically not working (I was a freelance art director at the time) on anything but the dollhouse, I finished it. Sort of. I was decorating and wiring it for lights as I built it and just as I was plugging in the last light…POW! Circuit blown! Which meant re-doing all the wallpaper and wiring. Once I calmed down, I vowed never to touch it (dusting included) until I was mentally ready again. Today marks the 8th anniversary of finishing and, as you can see, I’ve kept my vow. Oh, and so you know, another (and perhaps the biggest) Wry Baby obsession is Haunted Houses. So there was no way I was going to make The Beacon Hill as it was intended and I sure as heck wasn’t going to dust it either. Allow me to show you around. Watch your step!

If someone told you that you were signing copies of your new baby book at “the Towers in Huntersville”. woud you think they meant Tower Records? That’s totally what I thought (even though Kelly said they went strictly online ). But there I was yesterday afternoon at the towers in Huntersville, NC. I’m still not really sure why I was there, in 105 degrees of heat along a gravel equestrian path about .5 miles away from a horse show. But our publisher, Running Press, must have their reasons. I did meet a couple of ladies on horseback who stopped for a chat (“Hi”). And they had some pretty big horses which meant lots of shade! Believe you me, I’m totally bringing water to the next signing!
