Wry Baby’s Trade Show Secret Proves We’re Crazy.

Ahh, my clothes are sticking to my body, I can’t get enough cold beer in my system and our AC is on 24/7. It must be time for us to think about what the Wry Baby booth is going to look like at the New York International Gift Fair this summer.

Unlike most other companies you see at the NYIGF, Wry Baby goes through the expensive and totally stupid exercise of themeing our booth to match what we happen to be launching at that time. For instance, long ago, when we just had funny onesies (we call ‘em snapsuits), our booth consisted of floor to ceiling shelves of our vinyl-bagged funny baby clothes. When we came out with Super Snapsuits, we had a super hero theme complete with heroically caped sales attendants. Below you’ll see what we did last January when we launched our limited edition political line.

Other than the complete thematical layover, what’s so crazy? This. We make an intricate, scale model of our booth for every show to map out where every single poster, podium and POP goes. And then we dress it out with foam core shoppers and drop a camera in for that “Ooh, it’s like I’m standing in the booth” view to see if what we’re planning is what we want to be executing when we drop into the Big Apple.

But, while it’s very time consuming, it’s not that unheard of. We actually learned the trick from our hero, Walt Disney. Before any attraction was seriously considered for Disneyland, Walt would have his model shop make meticulous scale models and mount them at eye level to achieve the same “I’m really there” perspective. So call me mad, sir, but if it’s good enough for Uncle Walt, it’s good enough for Wry Baby!
